Southern Artist Bridges Traditional Painting and the Digital World

Rodrick Howard is a a Black Southern oil painter, born in the late 90’s, living and working between Boston, Massachusetts, and Memphis, Tennessee. He’s pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Art, Film, and Visual Studies with a minor in Computer Science at Harvard College and graduates in May of 2025. Howard’s artistic journey began in Mississippi, where he took art classes and first encountered the rich storytelling traditions of the American South. His early works, heavily influenced by literature, social media, and the region’s complex history, feature intimate portraits and surreal mythological references that capture the multifaceted nature of Southern identity.

His recent work, part of his Harvard Senior Thesis project, is an exploration and reflection of his period of military service and the transition that followed.
